(Nairobi, Kenya – September 23, 2025) The Open Forum on Agricultural Biotechnology (OFAB) has announced that its flagship OFAB Media Awards (OMAs) are now open to entries from all African states.

Established in 2017, the OMAs celebrates accurate, ethical and impactful journalism that helps the public better understand agricultural biotechnology — a vital tool in addressing challenges that farmers face, such as climate change, pests and crop diseases.

Recognising the evolving media landscape, OFAB has also introduced a dedicated category for online and digital media. Digital journalists can now compete alongside their peers in print, radio and television.

Previously, the OMAs were open only to journalists from the OFAB member countries of Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Malawi, Mozambique, Burkina Faso, Nigeria and Ghana. Now, eligible journalists from any African country can participate. The expansion will broaden opportunities for journalists across the continent to be recognised for excellence in biotechnology reporting.

The OMAs submission process will continue as usual for OFAB countries, while journalists from other African countries will submit entries directly through the OFAB Africa secretariat.

“The awards honour journalism that is accurate, ethical and impactful reporting that improves public understanding of agricultural biotechnology and its role in transforming African agriculture,” said Vitumbiko Chinoko, OFAB Project Manager at AATF.

To date, the OMAs have recognised more than 170 journalists at the national level, with 48 awarded at the continental level. The awards reflect OFAB’s commitment to promoting science, technology and innovation as critical drivers of agricultural transformation.

Eligible applicants include Media Council-accredited journalists from mainstream, digital and multimedia platforms. Freelance journalists, content creators and independent media professionals are also eligible to apply. There are no entry fees.

Award categories include Print, Radio, Television and Digital/Online Media. All entries must have been published or broadcast between 30 July 2024 and 30 September 2025.  Entries are due on 15 October 2025, at 5:00 p.m. EAT.

The overall winner will receive $3,500 in prize money, a trophy, an iPhone 16 Pro Max and a certificate. Each category winner will be awarded $1,500, an iPhone 15 Pro Max and a certificate, while runners-up will receive $1,000, an iPhone 15 Pro Max and a certificate. All finalists are sponsored by OFAB to attend the award ceremony, which is held in one of the OFAB countries, in person.

The OMAs were launched in partnership with like-minded institutions that host OFAB in the various countries, including: the Institute for Environmental and Agricultural Research (INERA), Burkina Faso; the Ethiopian Institute for Agricultural Research (EIAR); the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Ghana; the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications (ISAAA), Kenya; the National Biotechnology Development Agency (NABDA), Nigeria; Tanzania’s Commission for Science and Technology (COSTECH); the Uganda National Council of Science and Technology (UNCST); the Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resources Development Board (RAB); the National Commission for Science and Technology (NCST), Malawi; and the Institute of Agricultural Research in Mozambique (IIAM). These partners share OFAB’s goal of promoting science, technology and innovation, particularly biotechnology in agriculture.
