- AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT IN AFRICA:
The African Union and the African Agricultural Technology Foundation Sign Memorandum of Understanding The African Union (AU) Commission and the African Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that will see them work together to raise agricultural productivity in Africa through technology access, development, delivery and uptake. The collaboration will facilitate the deployment of proven technologies to help address the constraints faced by smallholder African farmers. ‘We recognise and appreciate the contribution that AATF is making towards Africa’s agricultural development. The signing of the MoU today is a testimony to a mutual aspiration to work together to sustain the economic backbone of the continent and its peoples especially those who depend on agriculture and associated appropriate technologies for their livelihoods,’ said Mrs Rhoda Tumusiime Peace, the Commissioner for Rural Economy and Agriculture of the AU Commission during the signing of the agreement at the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The Commissioner underscored the importance of partnerships saying progress gained to date requires stronger commitment and support on the part of the Commission, the Regional Economic Commissions and other Pan African institutions involved in agricultural development. - Denis Kyetere to Head the African Agricultural Technology Foundation
Dr Denis Tumwesigye Kyetere has been appointed the Executive Director at the African Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF). Dr Kyetere will assume office on 1 January 2012. “Dr Kyetere brings with him a wealth of experience in hands on agricultural research and management gained from working with both public and private sector partnership projects at Uganda’s National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO)’’ said AATF Board Chair Prof Idah Sithole-Niang, when she made the announcement to staff and management in Nairobi recently. ‘’This experience will be of great benefit to AATF whose mission involves working through partnerships to deliver on its key mandate of accessing and delivering affordable agricultural technologies for use by smallholder farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa” Prof Idah added. Dr Kyetere is a national of Uganda where he grew up in a mixed cattle keeping and crop growing homestead. Denis is a Geneticist and a Plant Breeder, with a PhD from The Ohio State University (OSU), Ohio, USA; an MSc in plant breeding from the University of Wales, Aberystwyth College, UK and a BSc (Hons) in Botany and Zoology from Makerere University, Uganda. The African Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF) has received a US$1 million support package from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to facilitate the organisation’s operations, which seek to boost agricultural output through greater use of science and technology. The funds will mainly support general operations, resource mobilisation as well as monitoring and evaluation of various on-going projects, which aim at helping small holder farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa improve their livelihoods and productivity through use of innovative technologies. St. Louis, MO and Des Moines, IA (PRWEB) May 04, 2011: The Donald Danforth Plant Science Center and DuPont today announced a $4 million grant from the Howard G. Buffett Foundation to bring healthier sorghum to underserved communities in Africa. The grant will help fund the completion of the development of biofortified sorghum, a more nutritious and digestible sorghum for Africans who depend upon sorghum as their staple diet. DuPont business Pioneer Hi-Bred began working on the project in 2005 in conjunction with the African Biofortified Sorghum (ABS) Consortium, an Africa-led public-private partnership. The ABS Consortium is a key partner in this project and will work to secure regulatory approvals and pursue production and deployment plans as Pioneer and Danforth complete product development. - Danforth Plant Science Center Collaborative Research Program Receives Major Grant to Fight Malnutrition in the Developing World—
ST. LOUIS, MO April 13, 2011 - The Donald Danforth Plant Science Center announced today that it has received an $8.3 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to advance its work to improve the health and wellbeing of farmers, their families, and other consumers of cassava living in Nigeria and Kenya. Funds will be used to support Phase II of BioCassava Plus (BC Plus), an innovative project that aims to reduce malnutrition by increasing the nutritional value of cassava, a staple crop consumed by more than 250 million sub-Saharan Africans and nearly 700 million people worldwide. Dr. Martin Fregene will serve as the lead investigator. Those who depend on cassava for food often suffer from chronic malnutrition, or insufficient intake of essential nutrients and vitamins including pro-vitamin A, iron and protein. According to the World Health Organization, this malnutrition often leads to blindness and other illnesses, disability and death for an estimated 250,000 to 500,000 children each year. More ...
