In memory of Robert L Harness – member of AATF Board of Trustees

Robert L Harness joined the AATF Board of Trustees in April 2010, bringing to the AATF valuable experience in biotechnology policy, product regulatory approval and public acceptance. Bob took his Trustee duties seriously always going the extra mile to help AATF achieve its mission. During his short service/term on the Board, Bob positively impacted the work of AATF and that of its individual staff members by showing keen interest and making valuable comments and contributions into the Foundation’s work as needed. Bob actively participated in Board deliberations, and his opinion was extremely valued by the other Trustees especially as he brought his wide experience and expertise to bear on both the Audit and Development Committees. Indeed, staff will remember how Bob extended his stay in Nairobi while on his first Board meeting in April 2010 to hold a day-long seminar with them where in-depth discussions of regulatory principles and related science issues were held. The discussions went further to examine the role of AATF in the development of regulatory structures, policies and procedures in Sub-Saharan Africa, and in acquiring regulatory approvals for its products. Staff will remember how Bob shared his knowledge openly during that seminar, providing his personal views and inputs and also offering to provide further assistance where needed. Staff also benefited from Bob’s ability to simplify complicated matters, making way for finding possible solutions. Bob was also always quick to offer individual staff encouragement as they proceeded with their various assignments often sending statements of congratulations on jobs well done.

Bob’s unexpected death on Sunday 28 August 2011 was received with profound shock and sadness by the AATF Board of Trustees and staff. He had a great and positive impact on AATF during his tenure as he demonstrated enthusiasm in the fulfillment of his responsibilities as a Trustee. Bob will be missed by the AATF family. May his soul rest in peace.
